MARILYN MANSON- “Heaven Upside Down” Album Review

Album Review

Marilyn Manson is releasing an album on October 6th, 2017, and it’s called Heaven Upside Down. It was leaked on the internet 16 days before it’s intended release, and there has been a lot of talk about it falling short of expectations. Manson had said previously that it was more in line with fan favorite Antichrist Superstar; upon listening to it I, and most others, would say that it is a far cry from the greatness of that album. However, that is not to say that it is a bad album, because it is not bad at all. I rather like it, because it does have some of the more industrial edged guitars, and then some of Manson’s more electronic elements melded with his typical lyrical content. I guess if I was to compare it with past releases, I would say it’s a mix of Mechanical Animals, and Antichrist Superstar, with more emphasis on the previous one.

“Say10”, “Tattooed in Reverse”, and “We Know Where You Fucking Live” are all really cool tracks. They have that Manson trademark sound, and don’t stray too far from what he has done in the past. Of the 3, “Tattooed in Reverse” is my favorite one; it just has a cool vocal melody, and is very Mechanical Animals meets Pale Emperor sounding. The one track getting the most criticism, that I’ve seen anyway, is “Kill4Me”. Personally, I like the song, even though it is fairly similar to “Third Day of a Seven Day Binge”. Actually, they are almost identical if you listen to them one right after the other. Thankfully for the track, “Third Day of a Seven Day Binge” was my favorite on Pale Emperor, so hearing a song that reminds me of it isn’t a total let down; I can also see why others would think it is though, the 2 tracks are just so similar. The title track is also pretty good, but I find myself wishing that new ground would be broken by the band. I’ve always dug what Manson does, but it’s time to try something new, something dangerous, something that makes the music world lose their collective shit; remember when everything he did made people lose their minds? Pepperidge Farm remembers, and so do I.

If you’re a Marilyn Manson fan than you’ll like this album, but if you hated Pale Emperor than you’ll hate this album too. I like it myself, but still wish for the more dangerous Manson from the 90’s. Heaven Upside Down comes out October 6th, 2017, and it is worth checking out for sure. I’ll be getting my physical copy, because I love the collecting aspect of compact discs. Besides, it’s the only you can get a decent look at the artwork, and packaging, that goes into albums.
